Park Update – Celebrate the Great American Outdoors Act Anniversary With Free Entrance Fees on Public Lands

August 4, 2023

Dear Partners:

In recognition of the 2020 Great American Outdoors Act’s (GAOA) contributions to the nation’s public lands, park entrance fees will be waived Friday, Aug. 4 at all lands managed by the Department of the Interior. Other fees, such as overnight camping, cabin rentals, group day use and use of special areas, remain in effect.

The 2020 Great American Outdoor Act is historic bipartisan legislation that expands equitable and accessible recreational opportunities and addresses long overdue infrastructure improvement and modernization needs on public lands managed by the National Park Service (NPS), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Indian Education schools. The funding is reducing the maintenance and repair backlog, protecting critical resources, expanding recreational opportunities, and promoting long-term sustainable operations.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is pleased to be included in the Great American Outdoor Act Legacy Restoration Fund program to alleviate NPS backlog maintenance with a large infrastructure utility project. This project will provide overdue rehabilitation of our water and wastewater systems at Wahweap and Lone Rock that were installed in the 1970s and 1980s.

These systems are critical infrastructure that provides basic essential services to our visitors. This project will reduce maintenance costs, improve efficiency, protect resources, and be successful in meeting these basic needs for the coming decades.
