May 1, 2017 - Rock Creek to Balanced Rock Cyn

E-mail Print PDF
Hey we got home yesterday from a week on Lake Powell.  We haven't been there this early in the year for quite a while so it was different for us.
We made camp in Grotto canyon and fished from Rock Creek up to Balanced Rock Canyon for the week. The fishing was very good as usual; the
weather a little challenging. We thought our campsite was tucked away pretty good to escape the evening winds, but soon learned that there
really isn't anywhere on Powell to escape the wind! We got blasted with those evening 30 mph gusts several nights! Thank goodness our Pontoon
enclosure stood the test. During the day it was nice except for Tuesday a storm front moved in and it couldn't decide whether it would rain or not.
We finally just went to camp after fishing in the morning and went for a hike.  We came home Thursday after the forecast for Friday was 20
degrees cooler.
As I said the fishing was good, too many SMB to keep count, some nice 2+ lbs, 19 LMB, 6 Walleye, 22 Stripers. We caught almost all the fish on
Yamamoto 5" grubs and the magic color was Grn Pumpkin/BlkFlk on 1/2 ounce jig heads. We tried some other colors but green seemed to work
the best. We fished from on shore to 30 ft. and found fish willing to bite in every location.  We had the most success in the backs of canyons or
any inlet where we found structure or shelves.  It was a great trip! Can't wait until June to go again when it's Warmer!  Thanks again Wayne for
the great website, the information is always helpful!
