Lake Powell
Tagged Walleye Contest July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017
Information and Rules
Purpose: A new sportfish management plan was developed for Lake Powell in 2015. among other things, walleye were identified as an underutilized and potentially problematic species in Lake Powell. Walleye numbers have increased drastically in recent years and are expected to continue to do well in the lake. Additionally, they are moving up tributaries (San Juan and Colorado River) causing problems for native species recovery programs. The management plan called for increased promotion and harvest of walleye. This contest will assist UDWR with:
1. Additional promotion, excitement, and harvest of walleye
2. Enable UDWR to collect valuable information regarding harvest, fishing techniques, timing, and demographics from contestants
3. May aid in better Understanding of walleye movement up river systems
Contest: The contest will begin on July 1, 2016 and last for one year (we will do additional years depending on success). The UDWR and volunteers from walleye clubs in Utah and Arizona will assist with tagging 1,000 walleye. A list of general locations (Canyon) of tagged fish will be made available to contestants. All contestants will be required to sign up online prior to fishing. Prizes, depending on donations, will be given to each contestant that catches a tagged walleye until all prizes have been distributed. At the end of the contest (June 30, 2017) any remaining prizes will be distributed in one/all of the following manners:
1. Random drawing based on photos of contestants with walleye at Lake Powell they have harvested (submitted to Waynes Words - link and/or UDWR Southern Region Facebook Page - link)
