Jumpin minnow- My favorite surface lure is back weighted with rattling bb's for long accurate casts and noisy retrieve. Front eyelet line attachment point is right in front of lure which makes a rod bouncing retrieve essential for the proper "walking action". |
Zara Spook- Most common walking bait. Similar to many other top water stick baits. Different from jumpin minnow in front attachment point which is under the chin. Makes for a higher, more erratic walking pattern with rod-pumping retrieve. You will notice this lure has been modified by removing the front hook and adding a feather teaser to the back hook. |
Buzz Bait- Standard white living rubber buzzer with noisy spinner on one side and the skirted hook on the other. Soft plastic trailer can be added to hook for more appeal to bass or fished without trailer for stripers in boils. |
Chug bug- Has a popping face for gurgling retrieve which is combined with walking action when rod is bounced on relieve. Clear color allows heavy bait to be cast great distances and land with a loud splash while fish see only the small feather (Mylar) tail with hook. |
Sugoi Splash- Representative of an entire class of surface baits which can be used for bass or stripers. This is a stop and go spitting bait which mimics surface feeding shad that often splash and "spit" water as they feed. Can be retrieved quickly but does not cast as far or cover as much water as the bigger surface baits.
Fat Free Shad - Representative of many similar shaped, fat-bodied, deep diving lures. The bigger the lip the deeper it runs. Similar to Shad -R, Frenzy, Big-O, Shad Rap, Fat Rapa and many others. Probably the most popular style of crank bait. |
Poes (400) - Similar in style to fat free shad. Poes is a high quality, glossy finish lure. |
Smithwick Rogue- Representative of class of "jerk baits" including husky jerk. These baits run deep when cranked but suspend when paused. They can then be jerked to make them twitch and paused for the "dead fish" action. |
Little Mac- My favorite trolling lure is no longer made but the Big Mac which is a longer lure is still available. This is a trolling and cranking lure that dives when cranked. Similar lures that are good for trolling an casting are rebel minnow, Bomber long A, and Rapala. |
Rat-L-Trap- Vibrating lure without a lip. It sinks when cast and then comes up to about 8 feet on a fast retrieve. The internal bb's make an incredible sonic noise on a fast retrieve.
Cordell Spot - original vibrating crank bait. Like Rat-L-trap works well in shallow turbid water where fish are "reacting" to feeding opportunities. |
Cordell Redfin- Similar to Little Mac, can be cast or trolled. The 5 inch model shown is light and not a good casting lure. The 7 inch model is huge but very sporty to use when stripers are boiling and willing to smack lure in the air. They will slash at the big lure several times before trying to eat it. What fun! |
